Curriculum of Prof. Roberto Pompoli

Roberto Pompoli was born in Ferrara, Italy in November 14, 1944. Graduated in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bologna in 1970, he was Assistant Professor of Applied Physics from 1973 to 1983 later Associated Professor from 1983 to 1986 at the same University of Bologna. Full Professor in 1986, he moved first to the University of Cagliari and later on to the University of Parma. From 1991 he is Full Professor of Applied Physics at the University of Ferrara. He received a PhD degree in 1983 at the Institute of Sound and Vibration (ISVR) - University of Southampton (GB) with a thesis on “ Sound radiation prediction by scale model”.

Visiting Professor at the Graduate Program in Acoustics - State College (PA) - Penn State University (1983), at Stanford University (1985) and at the University of Los Angeles (UCLA) (1986).

His research activity has been mainly devoted to room and building acoustics and in the field of noise control engineering. In charge of national and international research projects funded by the National Research Council (CNR), and by the European Commission. Author of about 100 papers published in national and international journals and conference proceedings.

From 2002  up to now Dean of the Engineering Faculty.  From 1993 to 2001 head of the Engineering Department of the University of Ferrara. Founder and first Director of CIARM, a research centre on room and musical acoustics established between the Universities of Bologna, Ferrara and Padova. Founder and Director of the School of Acoustics: an Institution of the University of Ferrara which organises courses of different levels on architectural acoustics, environmental noise and noise control engineering.

From 1984 to 1986 secretary of the Italian Acoustic Association (AIA); since 1991 in charge of the Environmental Acoustic Group of AIA. From 2002 President of the Italian Acoustic Association (AIA).  Consultant on Education in Acoustics for the Board of European Acoustics Association (EAA). Member of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) and of the Audio Engineering Society (AES).

Member of the Editorial Board of Applied Acoustics from 1983 to 1986 and since 1984 of the Rivista Italiana di Acustica, the Journal of the Italian Acoustic Association.

Active member in the Acoustic Commission of the Italian Standardisation Institution (UNI); convenor of working group on Environmental Noise. Head of the Italian delegation in many plenary meetings of CEN/TC 126 and ISO/TC43/SC1 and SC2; member of WG 1 of CEN/TC126 and Convenor of Ad Hoc Group 4 for the same WG1.

Acoustic consultant for the Nuovo Teatro Comunale in Cagliari: an Opera House with 1300 seats, opened in September 1993. Acoustic consultant of the Foundation “Arena di Verona”: an Institution which organises operas performances in the roman amphitheatre of Verona. In charge of the acoustic measurements on the 1/16 scale models of the new Opera Houses “La Scala 2” and “Arcimboldi” in Milano. Acoustic expert for the Commission which judged the competition for the reconstruction of the Opera House “La Fenice” in Venezia.
